While there is much efficiency in running this with a sense of urgency, and I do agree with some of your points presented - I've learned in my own world that such arrangements allows for a considerable boost in moral and reinforce team-building.
My group was on a world-saving quest, but I was taken...no more dragged at the time into experiencing an onsen with the others. At the time I had argued it was childish and we had more pressing issues. I realize now that such experiences aided us to grow as a team and work together.
In the end, I believe a healthy mixture of both will serve both to enforce a sense of urgency, but keep the group's moral up. When a world presents us with dangers such as this one, keeping a leveled head is considerably important.
